Airbourne 2023 Review

Hi guys last weekend was my favourite 4 days of the year Airbourne! Whilst we weren't quite as blessed with the weather as last year's show I still had a great time and there was lots of decent flying. Like with last year's blog I'll take you through the show day by day.

Thursday

On the first day of the show Corney and I had seats in the grandstand (thank you for the birthday present Mum & Dad) which gave a different perspective on the show. Unfortunately the Red Arrows weren't able to make it due to a technical issue but everything else displayed on a lovely sunny day.

Corney enjoying the view

The wheel made for some cool photos

Buying merchandise helps keep the show going so I felt it was the perfect excuse to adopt Biggles ....

Here are some video highlights of Thursday's show -

The show was opened by the Boultbee Spitfire

Team Raven

The Firefly looked beautiful against the blue sky

The Rolls Royce Spitfire & Mustang filled the sky with the beautiful sound of their engines.

The highlight of the day for me was the Battle Of Britain Memorial Flight with their Spitfire, Hurricane & Lancaster.

Friday

The day dawned not quite so bright and sunny but being the brave souls that we are my Auntie and I braved the rain and mist to get a decent spot on the beach.

Unfortunately the low cloud and mist put paid to the displays until the late afternoon when the Chinook finally made it through much to the enthusiasm of the crowd.

The Red Arrows made it after their cancellation the day before and were able to make some passes for the crowd despite the mist leaving them unable to perform their full display.

You can see how misty it was

The Typhoon saved the afternoon with a thundering display.

Our local paper the Eastbourne Herald very kindly published some of my photos.

Here are the highlights from the day -

Saturday

On Saturday I was joined by the Gin(andbeer)stitue so that obviously meant cocktails on the beach!

I went for a Mediterranean Blush and of course the traditional Pimms

Luke & Barry

My Pimms & me

The weather was absolutely perfect, lots of sunshine and a slight breeze to keep things cool. It was also the first time we saw the Typhoon & Lancaster formation after Friday's bad weather and it was worth the wait 💓

The Typhoon then went onto it's own display. They also used 'Blackjack' the Union Jack painted Typhoon which I just adore.

Lots of vapour was kicked up again!

Team Raven

The RAF Tutor looked lovely against the blue (also thanks for your kind comments and likes on my Instagram photos guys).

The Red Arrows were able to put on their full display much to the delight of the crowd.

Strikemasters

Hawker Fury

One of the show-stealers of the weekend was Rich Goodwin's Jet Pitts, he's added jet engines to the side of his already incredibly maneuverable plane so that it now hovers ala a Harrier. Check out my video of it below and also please enjoy my discussion with a gentleman in the comments who told me that to describe the aircraft as a 'Jet Pitts' was incorrect and 'clickbaity' 😆😆

The highlights of the rest of the day -

Sunday

I wasn't able to drag anyone down to the beach with me on Sunday so it was a solo-trip until my lovely friend Petra dragged me across to meet the Red Arrows team The Blues to show them my Red Arrows tattoo. They were such lovely guys and took the time to have a chat and gave me the loveliest Red Arrows pin badge which now has pride of place on my gig bag.

I look so short 😆

The Red Arrows in action

As you can see from the backgrounds of the photos it was another beautiful day with barely any cloud at all.

A lovely top side pass from the Strikemasters

The Jet Pitts put on another fantastic display.

The climb rate on the aircraft is fantastic

The Norwegian Vampire made it's only appearance of the weekend after being tech on Saturday. It glinted beautifully in the sunshine.

The weather was also ideal for the Tigers Parachute Team to literally 'drop in' on the show.

The Battle Of Britain Memorial Flight Spitfire

The Battle Of Britain Memorial Flight Hurricane

My favourite moments of the weekend were without a doubt the Lancaster & Typhoon formations on Saturday and Sunday. It takes a huge amount of skill from both aircrew to make a display like that happen and they deserve all the accolades that they've been receiving. Here they are for the final time on Sunday.

Sunday's highlights -

I had a wonderful time at the show, as I always say there's something incredibly special about watching aircraft from the beach at my hometown show. The absolute pinnacle of my year is the moment that the Red Arrows shoot over the crowd into their display.

Next year is Airbourne's 30th Birthday and if you have any pennies to spare you can donate to keep the show going again next year here. Hopefully it'll carry on for years and years to come.

Thanks so much for reading my blog, I have a couple more shows before the end of the season - Duxford's Battle Of Britain & Flying Finale airshows and a potential trip to Bournemouth (trains and weather permitting) next weekend.

Love Jen
